Recipe Description
The Third Man is the happiest outcome ever from my randomly searching for cocktail recipes based on what I had lying around. I literally didn’t think I’d find anything that used Campari and bourbon much less Campari, bourbon and grapefruit juice! Little did I know, grapefruit juice and Campari are a sublime combo and they work with the darker spirits, though my instincts told me they cried out for gin. Not so! Like the Lion’s Tail using lime with bourbon in the most spectacular fashion, this combo defied my expectations for what bourbon can work with. Another spectacular cocktail! One of my favorites! AND it’s named after one of the greatest film noir ever! Too cool!!
Ingredients
-
1.5 oz bourbon
high quality - do I even need to say that? -
1 oz grapefruit juice
fresh squeezed or cold pressed is best but not critical -
3/4 oz lemon juice
fresh squeezed is critical -
3/4 oz Campari
love this stuff - and it's a "bitters" so it's great for hangovers or indigestion!! -
1/2 oz simple syrup
I always use demerara sugar (raw/turbinado) but granulated sugar is fine...put half sugar half filtered water in the microwave and zap for minute; stir. Repeat as necessary until sugar is fully dissolved. Let cool.
Preparation
Shake all ingredients with ice.
Service
Strain over one giant cube in an old fashioned glass and thank the Lord in Heaven you were put on the earth when something like this was possible.
