Jazzfest in NOLA is one of my favorite experiences of the year–I try never to miss it. I even drink the (nasty) frozen, neon red, metallic-tasting hurricanes with relish (at least you can have a libation during the shows!) However, I always spend Mardi Gras at home. Mardi Gras calls for hurricanes as well, as does any stuck-inside weather event, and if I’m making hurricanes at home they’re going to be a far sight better than the ones one drinks out of styrofoam cups on the Fairgrounds!
Combine spiced rum, white rum, lime juice, orange juice, passion fruit juice, grenadine and syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously.
Fill a hurricane-shaped or other large glass with crushed ice & garnish with lime wheel and cherry. (Some shake the drink with the ice then transfer the whole thing to the glass; I feel my way keeps it colder longer with less dilution.)
*Another beautiful glass (this one handmade!) from my friend JD at Port O Call. It’s a Gin Balloon by LSA International.
