Hurricane

Recipe Description

Jazzfest in NOLA is one of my favorite experiences of the year–I try never to miss it. I even drink the (nasty) frozen, neon red, metallic-tasting hurricanes with relish (at least you can have a libation during the shows!) However, I always spend Mardi Gras at home. Mardi Gras calls for hurricanes as well, as does any stuck-inside weather event, and if I’m making hurricanes at home they’re going to be a far sight better than the ones one drinks out of styrofoam cups on the Fairgrounds!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 ounces high quality spiced rum
Kraken is a fan favorite for sure.
  • 1.5 ounces high quality white rum
I like Mount Gay or Koloa.
  • 2 ounces Welch's Passion Fruit Cocktail
    indispensible (I know, right?)
  • 1 ounce fresh squeezed orange juice
can be store bought but it should be "fresh squeezed" if possible
  • 0.5 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 ounce grenadine
    I like Barsmith.
  • 0.5 ounce simple syrup
I like demerara syrup (half water half raw or turbinado sugar heated and stirred until dissolved) but simple syrup is fine too (made with white sugar and water)
  • 1 Luxardo cherry
  • 1 lime wheel
  • glassful crushed ice
I don't have a crushed ice machine so I just put ice cubes in a ziploc and beat them with a hammer--works pretty well!

Preparation

Combine spiced rum, white rum, lime juice, orange juice, passion fruit juice, grenadine and syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously.

Fill a hurricane-shaped or other large glass with crushed ice & garnish with lime wheel and cherry. (Some shake the drink with the ice then transfer the whole thing to the glass; I feel my way keeps it colder longer with less dilution.)

Service

Strain cocktail into glass.
